PERENNIALS
GERANIUMS.
We are keen on hardy geraniums. Generally speaking they are easily grown robust, hardy, and free flowering. They range from rock garden subjects to vigorous colonisers. The following are some we regard as the best of the 300 or so available. A lot of the more recently named varieties seem to differ only very slightly from established cultivars. We are always trialing or building up stock of further varieties:
‘Ann Folkard’: A hybrid of procurrens and psilostemon. Large magenta flowers with black eye July to October. Golden green foliage. Loose trailing habit to 18” x 24”, Z8.
‘Ann Thomson’: Same parents as above, and similar flowers and foliage, but a bushier habit. Z8.
Asphodeloides: Quietly charming woodland species forming a mound sprinkled with pale pink starry flowers from June to October. 18”. Z6.
Cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’: Mat forming dense ground cover, this is a white flowered form found in Yugoslavia; flowering early to midsummer. 6” x 12”. Z6.
Cantabrigiense ‘Cambridge’: Similar to above but pinkish mauve and more vigorous 6” x 18”. Z6.
Cinereum subcaulescens: Dwarf rosette forming, late spring early summer, magenta with dark centre, 6” x 12”. Z6.
Clarkei ‘Kashmir Purple’: Ornamental cut leaves, flowers early to late summer, lilac with red veins 18” high, spreads slowly. Z5.
Clarkei ‘Kashmir White’: Similar to above with white flowers, less vigorous. Z5.
Dalmaticum: Dwarf creeping evergreen, small glossy leaves, small pink flowers summer. Miniature in every respect. 4”x 8”. Z5.
Endressii: A vigorous spreading species, almost evergreen light green leaves, bright pink flowers early summer to early autumn, one of the best ground cover species 1ft high. Z5.
Himalayense plenum: Also known as ‘Birch Double’, fully double lilac purple 1” flowers1ft x 2ft. Z5.
‘Johnson’s Blue’: A popular hybrid, forming a dense clump of foliage, above which appear a long succession of lavender blue flowers in summer, 1ft x 2ft: Z5.
Macrorrhizum: Excellent ground cover, making a dense clump of aromatic evergreen leaves. Will grow in shade and almost any soil. Pink flowers in early summer. 1ft x 3ft. In addition to the original type we have the following named forms. Z5:
‘Bevan’s Variety’; crimson purple flowers;
‘Czakor’; magenta flowers ,foliage tinted purple in autumn;
‘Inwersen’s Variety’; pale pink flowers glossy leaves;
‘Pindus’ low growing, flowers magenta-pink with scarlet filaments;
‘White Ness’; pure white flowers;
Magnificum: Vigorous clump forming species, with large leaves and profuse 2” violet-blue flowers in midsummer. 2ft x 2ft. Z5.
Orientalitibeticum: Low growing spreader. Small leaves green marbled with cream. Pink flowers in summer. 6” x 12”. Z5.
Oxonianum ‘A. T. Johnson’: Strong growing evergreen; free flowering from late spring to mid-autumn, silvery pink. 1ft x 2ft. Z5.
Oxonianum ‘Rose Clair’: Similar to above but with dark pink flowers. Long flowering. 1ft x 2ft. Z5.
Phaeum: A tall (30” x 24”) small flowered species of considerable charm, which due to its tendency to cross breed has given birth to numerous colour forms with numerous names. All Zone 5. We supply;
‘Album’; white flowers;
‘Mourning Widow '; Deep magenta which is probably the original;
‘lividum’; pale lilac;
‘Lily Lovell’; larger purplish blue;
Pratense ‘Cluden Sapphire’. Pale blue shading to lilac at the centre with white veins. Flowers May to July. 2½ft. Z4.
Pratense ‘Mrs. Kendal Clark’: Handsome deeply divided leaves, making a large clump; flowers pearl-grey flushed rose early and midsummer 2ft x 2ft. Z5.
Pratense ‘Victor Reiter’. Purple foliage. Flowers lavender blue June to August. Choice. 1½ft. Z4.
Pulchrum: Dense sprays of 2 1/2” purple veined mauve flowers, on a robust plant up to 3ft. Likes wet places. Hardy to about -10C. Z8 borderline
Renardii: Unusual wrinkled sage green leaves forming a solid dome; flowers 1” white with violet veins in early summer; 12” x 12”. Z7
Sanguineum: Tight clump of small round leaves; produces masses of dark pink flowers with darker veins in early summer; 8” x 12”. Z5;
Sanguineum album: Taller with pure white flowers 12” x 18”. Z5;
Sanguineum ‘Max Frei’: Vivid magenta flowers June to August. Small round cut leaves. Low growing 6” Z7
‘Spinners’: Large violet flowers over a long period May to July. Large deeply cut leaves, gold tinted when young. . Strong growing mound to 2ft x 2ft. Z8.
Sylvaticum album: Tall spring flowering species, finely cut leaves , 1” pure white flowers 30” x 24”. Z5.
‘Tiny Monster’: Seemingly a large version of sanguineum forming a dome 10” x 18”. Large, vivid magenta flowers produced over a long period. Z8.
Wallichianum ‘Buxton’s Blue’: Blue flowers with large white centres from June to September. Excellent foliage, 1ft x 3ft. Z5.
Yoshinoi: A mat forming plant about 6” and slowly spreading. A succession of pink flowers with darker veins from July to September. Z8.
