CAREX  - An enormous genus of evergreen grasses, happy in most soils. Once the predominant genus before the introduction of many of the more recent introductions. The following are, we think, some of the better ones:

 CAREX COMANS BRONZE FORM

 CAREX DIPSACEA

Narrow, olive green leaves, with black flowers.  1ft x 1ft. Z7.

CAREX PHYLLOCEPHALA ‘SPARKLER’.

CAREX SIDEROSTICHA’ KISO-KAIDO’.

Low growing broad leaved grass to about 8”. Leaves mid-green with wide white central stripe. Z6.

CHASMANTHIUM LATIFOLIUM

Upright arching clump forming grass, worth growing for the large flat oat-like flowers, pale green in  midsummer, turning red-bronze in autumn and staying through the winter.  4ft x 2ft. Z8.

CORTADERIA SELLANOA AUREOLINEATA

Form of Pampas Grass with golden variegated foliage. Arching habit  of modest size. 3ft x 3ft. Smallish white plumes. Z8.

CORTADERIA SELLANOA ‘WHITE FEATHER’.

Pampas Grass seems to have fallen out of favour, but is well worth growing in our view, if you have the right place for it. A majestic plant providing valuable winter interest, and impressive dried plumes. The leaves can reach 3ft x 3ft, the flowers about 6ft. Z7.
