MELICA ALTISSIMA PURPUREA

Pointed. mid-green leaves; long spikes of flat dark purple flowers on one side of stem only.  Good for drying.  2ft x 16”. Z5. 

MELICA CILIATA.

Foliage grey-green to 8” with flower stems rising over the foliage to 30”. Flower plumes narrow, dense, fluffy, white fading to cream.  Z6. 

MELICA TRANSYLVANICA

Blue -green leaves, silky purple tinged flower spikes. 18” x 6”. Z6.

MISCANTHUS SACCARIFOLIUS.

Upright solid clump reaching 8ft. The leaves are broad mid-green slightly arching. the flowers plumes on strong stalks are typical miscanthus, white fluffy and fan shaped, lasting well into winter. This grass, in summer, has a similar impact to bamboo. Z6. 

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS.

There about one hundred forms or cultivars differing in height, habit, foliage variation, and flower size and colour. some of the best  forms are described briefly below: 

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS ‘FERNER OSTEN’.

A form with pronounced red flower plumes opening from mid-summer. Narrow foliage with some autumn foliage colour. 4ft x 2ft. Z6. 

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS ‘KLEINE SILBERSPINNE’.

Arching mound with delicate narrow leaves. Silvery flowers from August. later turning buff and standing well through winter. 5ft x 2ft. Z5. 

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS ‘MALEPARTUS’.

Narrow arching silver veined dark green leaves, topped by coppery red flowers in the autumn which fade to fluffy white and stay through winter. Foliage to about 3ft x 1ft. flowers up to 6ft. Z5. 

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS ‘ MORNING LIGHT’.

Sometimes called Gracillimus variegatus. Smaller than most sinensis, with very narrow leaves having white edges.  Pinkish flowers in autumn fading to white. Possibly the most elegant of all Miscanthus, but can be slow to reach a good size. Leaves to 2ft, flowers to 4ft.Z5. 

MISCANTHUS SINENSIS ZEBRINUS.Tall slender but solid clump of broad mid green leaves with yellow bands across the blades. Feathery sprays of silky flowers in the autumn. A highly desirable large grass. 6ft x 2ft. Z6 

MOLINIA CAERULIA ARUNDINACEA ‘KARL FOERSTER’.

Arching mound of green foliage to 30” from which fan flower stems to 6ft with airy purple flower plumes. The entire plant turns golden-yellow in autumn, persisting into winter. Z4. 

MOLINIA CAERULIA ARUNDINACEA ‘ SKYRACER’.

Similar to ‘Karl Foerster’ but taller  and more erect. Leaves to 3ft., turning gold in autumn.   Large stiff straw coloured flower sprays to 8ft. Z4. 

MOLINIA CAERULIA ARUNDINACEA ‘TRANSPARENT’.

Generally similar to the two mentioned above, ‘Transparent’ has very airy open purplish flower plumes which turn orangey brown in autumn. 6ft. Z4.
